How AI Agents Actually Decide What to Remember

Not everything that happens in a company deserves to become memory. That's a stranger claim than it sounds, because the instinct in building a memory system is to try to capture everything, on the theory that more coverage means more usefulness. In practice, a system that tries to remember all of it ends up worse than one that remembers nothing, because the interesting problem was never storage. It's judgment.

Most of what flows through a company is noise

By volume, most of what moves through a company's tools in a day isn't knowledge, it's notifications, scheduling back and forth, small talk. A memory system that treats all of it equally drowns the handful of genuinely important facts in a sea of things nobody will ever need again.

The first decision: does this matter at all

Before anything gets extracted, something has to make a fast, cheap judgment call: does this look like it contains a fact worth keeping. This filter runs on nearly everything, so it has to be efficient, and it has to lean conservative about what it discards, since a wrong call here means real information never gets a chance at the next step.

The second decision: what is the fact, specifically

For content that passes the filter, the next question is narrower: what specifically is the fact inside this. A Slack thread might run four hundred words that compress down to one sentence: the client's contract renews in March, and the account is currently at risk. Everything else was the conversation that produced the fact, not the fact itself.

The third, least obvious decision: does this agree with what's known

A new fact that contradicts an older one isn't automatically correct just because it's newer, but it usually is, and a real memory system has to actually resolve that tension. This is the step most systems skip, and it's arguably the most important. Independent benchmarks like LoCoMo, cited in Mem0's 2026 memory report, specifically test this kind of contradiction-handling over long time horizons, which is a meaningfully harder problem than simple fact retrieval, and one most memory systems still handle poorly.

What good judgment produces over time

Get all three decisions right, consistently, and what accumulates starts to resemble how a genuinely well-informed employee thinks, a working understanding built from what actually mattered, not a growing archive of everything ever said. Get them wrong, and the result is a bigger, slower version of the same noisy pile everyone was already drowning in.
